10th African Diaspora Awards
December 1st 2022
The first day of the last month of the year was a brisk evening. Air was crisp evidence of winter, this contrasted with the warmth and excitement buzzing around us. The atmosphere is alive with anticipation for the 10th African Diaspora Awards, I couldn't help but feel a profound sense of honor and gratitude. I was attending this prestigious event at the Florence Gould hall in midtown-town to commemorate the accomplishments of the African diaspora.
The atmosphere buzzed with excitement as guests from diverse backgrounds mingled, sharing stories of their shared heritage and experiences. The sense of unity and pride was palpable, and I couldn't help but be swept up in the collective celebration. Additionally, I was also celebrating my 10-year journey as a writer on this platform. To my surprise, my photograph, captured by the talent Arthur Hylton was featured in the event booklet, a testament to the impact made within the community. Arthur took the photo at the New York Film Academy in 2016 during one of our many shoots and I remember posting the behind the scenes moments on my instagram.
To have my photograph featured in the event booklet was a moment of immense pride. I am grateful to Debo Folorushon, President of the SAID Institute (Society for Africans in the Diaspora). It was a testament to the countless hours spent researching, writing, and engaging with my readers. This recognition served as a reminder of the power of storytelling and the influence it carries in shaping perceptions and fostering connections.
One of the highlights of the evening was the opportunity to meet and engage with individuals who have made significant contributions to the African diaspora. From entrepreneurs and activists to artists and scholars, each person exuded a passion for their craft and a dedication to making a difference. Conversations flowed effortlessly, and I found myself inspired by their stories and aspirations.
The event was a splendid showcase of the diverse cultures and traditions within the African diaspora. From captivating musical performances to captivating displays of art and fashion, the rich tapestry of African heritage was on full display. It was a reminder of the strength and resilience of the diaspora, as well as the beauty that lies in our shared roots.
Attending the 10th African Diaspora Awards also marked a significant milestone in my personal journey as blogger and artist. Over the past ten years, my blog has evolved into a platform for celebrating African culture, amplifying voices, and fostering dialogue. It had become a virtual space that transcended boundaries, connecting people from around the world. This event served as a testament to the impact that passion, consistency, and perseverance can have on one's endeavors.
Many thanks to the SAID institute and Debo Folorushon for having me. It was an esteemed honor. My dear friend Arthur for capturing these stunning images, my sister Flo for your never ending love and support since childhood, my dear Malinda, a creative entrepreneur who flew from California to support, my sensei and dear bestie Mahfuza for standing with me through thick and thin.
The 10th African Diaspora Awards will forever hold a special place in my heart. To be surrounded by like-minded individuals, to witness the recognition of exceptional individuals, and to celebrate my own 10-year blogging anniversary was an extraordinary honor. This unforgettable experience reinvigorated my commitment to sharing stories and promoting cultural appreciation. As I left the event, I carried with me a renewed sense of purpose and a deep appreciation for the power of community and the African diaspora.
